This Russian icon was made in the 19th century using the egg tempera technique on a gilded silver background.
It depicts Saint Pantaleon (Panteleimon) in the center and four family saints on the border.
Pantaleon was born in the second half of the 3rd century in Nicomedia, in modern-day Turkey. He became a doctor and was persecuted by the Emperor of Constantinople Galerius for his adherence to the Christian faith. He was sentenced to death in 305. He is the patron saint of doctors (along with Saints Cosmas and Damian) and midwives. He is considered one of the fourteen holy helpers. He enjoyed a vast cult in the East and West since ancient times.
The icon comes with an expertise by Pietro Belletti of Imago Lignea.
