This icon, of remarkable artistic quality, was made in Russia in the 19th century, probably in St. Petersburg, using the egg tempera technique on wood panel.
It depicts the second of the great feasts of the liturgical year (September 14), namely the Exaltation of the Cross, which consists of the discovery of the Cross of Christ by Helena, mother of Constantine, in Jerusalem and its exposition to the faithful by Patriarch Macarius in 326. The icon therefore comes from an Iconostasis in which it was probably placed in the order of feasts.
The icon is accompanied by an expertise by Pietro Belletti of Imago Lignea.
