The large canvas depicts a spectacular battle raging under the fortress with unprecedented violence.
The scenes described are as dramatic as they are impressive for the rawness of the images.
A series of incredibly realistic clashes follow one another throughout the painting in a whirlwind of sequences that convey a sense of dismay to the viewer.
The composition is very articulated and the generous size of the work allows the Author to exhibit his vast figurative repertoire in guerrilla scenes.
The ability and great effort in describing all the details of the numerous protagonists of the battle with excellent finesse is truly remarkable.
The canvas, in fact, can be attributed to the renowned workshop of Jacques Courtois, nicknamed "il Borgognone" for his French origins, one of the most famous and prolific painters of battles in the capital during the 17th century.
His compositions were enormously successful and lent themselves excellently to furnishing the magnificent noble palaces of Rome and its surroundings.
