The high relief, of great historical and artistic interest, depicts the saint about to be killed with a dagger blow by an executioner, observed by a Roman soldier and curious bystanders. In the background, the Colosseum, and above, angels offering the palm of martyrdom and preparing to accompany her to heaven.
In the work, the influence of Algardi is evident and, in particular, of works such as the Miracle of Saint Agnes of the Oratory of the Filippini in Rome dated 1954.
The scene presents a rich and articulated play of drapery and stylistic features which demonstrate a unitary conception and execution by a follower of Aligardi during the fifth decade of the seventeenth century.
