Italian painter, 20th century
Doge's Palace towards Riva degli Schiavoni
Watercolor on canvas, cm 68 x 51
With frame, cm 88 x 62
Signed lower left and right Zi(?)li
The painting depicts the Doge's Palace towards the Palazzo delle Prigioni with the 19th-century Ponte della Paglia and the narthex of St. Mark's Basilica with the homonymous Column. The horizontal opening emphasized by Riva degli Schiavoni, on one side, corresponds to the vertical thrust of the Troad marble column with the bronze protector of the city, on the other.
The delicate drawing with which the artist sparingly arranged the patches of color gives back a romantic and dreamy vision, preserved by time, of the Venetian architectures.
The practice of portraying Venetian views, which began in modern times in the territory, spread widely in the European context thanks to the Grand Tour practice. The landscape subtlety in miniaturistically reproducing the smallest detail, for the love of truth and antiquarian taste, is also proposed in this pair of watercolors, in which the artist has not spared to return even the intricate Gothicisms of the Doge's Palace, together with the careful rhythmic succession of arches and capitals. The unmistakable Venetian beauty finds natural reflection in the technical skill of the painter, here masterfully using the watercolor technique.
