Annibale Gatti (Forlì 1827 - Florence 1909), attributed.
Allegorical scene
Oil on paper applied to panel, 25 x 30 cm - with frame 36 x 42
The work, being allegorical in nature, is certainly attributable to the hand of Annibale Gatti (1827-1909) based on stylistic analysis and comparison. A student of Giuseppe Bezzuoli, he was one of the major painters of the second half of the 19th century in Florence and the most representative of the period when Florence was the capital. Part of his production refers to mythological and allegorical scenes: the paper in question is a preparatory sketch belonging to this cycle, a representative example of the romantic-purist painting of the time. A female character with a turreted crown on her head, identifiable with the Greek goddess Tyche, sits on a throne accompanied by an Amor to her side with the torch of the sacred fire in her hand. At her feet, a cornucopia spills out weapons. Around her, five female figures place laurel crowns on the base of the throne. The women could represent the five continents in the act of entrusting their identity and protection to the goddess. In the background, an azure sky is sketched, while other figures are acting in the background.
The fortune of Annibale Gatti is attested by the commissions from the Florentine bourgeoisie and aristocracy of the time, as well as by the frescoes in the royal apartments of Villa Meridiana in Palazzo Pitti, in 1861, intended as the residence of King Vittorio Emanuele II. As confirmation of the notoriety reached by the painter, suffice it to say that one of his works was reported in the newspaper La Nazione on June 23, 1872, where it was announced that the painter was "finishing Paisiello putting his opera La Serva Padrona on stage before Catherine II of Russia." The attribution is further supported by a pencil inscription on the back.
