17th century
Scene with two puppies
Oil on canvas, 60 x 53 cm, with frame 80 x 73 cm
The painting in question, an oil on canvas attributable to the 17th century, depicts two puppies sitting on the ground whose attention is indistinctly directed towards a distant point, perhaps called to attention by their owner. In the foreground is a wide-brimmed hat adorned with a thick plumage of red and blue, typical heraldic colors, perhaps belonging to the family of the depicted puppies. Red and blue are also the colors of the bows knotted around the necks of the two animals. Near the hat is the hilt of a sword and, finally, a sheet of paper is visible with an inscription that is not clearly legible. The numbers 1 and 6 appear in the aforementioned sheet, which, assuming it is the dating of the written document, supports the theory that the painting was made in the 17th century. The canvas stands out for the rendering of the animals' coats as well as their lively muzzles of great naturalness and expressive truth, typical of the painting of this century. The dog is a symbol of fidelity, vigilance, friendship, obedience and gratitude. But the dog is also remembrance of the ancient hunting parties in use among lords and nobles. The breeds usually represented in heraldic coats of arms are greyhounds, mastiffs and pointers, however also other breeds can appear, although less frequently.
The object is in a good state of preservation
