"Village assault with knightly clash"
Oil on canvas
Flemish Master
17th century period
Canvas 98 x 88 frame 108 x 98
Excellent condition
The painting depicts a bloody and lively battle scene between groups of knights attacking, and others defending the nearby village. The clashes are set in a forest clearing and see the knights facing each other with rifles and melee weapons. The attackers are desperately resisted to avoid violence and abuse that is already noticeable in some images. In the foreground, a woman lies beheaded on the ground after being violated in front of a man tied to a tree, while in the background, silhouettes of tortured and hanged men can be seen in the distance. The duels between the knights of the two factions follow one another among the trees of the forest in every part of the painting, masterfully described by the Author of the work. The pictorial style, the setting of the scene and the fairy-tale atmosphere are the most typical characteristics of the 17th century Flemish school to which this fascinating battle scene must certainly be attributed.
