Mixed media (pencil, pen, brown ink and white chalk) on paper. Italian school of the early 1800s. Ludovico Maria Sforza mourns on the tomb of his young wife Beatrice d'Este (1475 -1497); around him are the friars of Santa Maria delle Grazie and Bramante and Leonardo to his left. On the short side of the marble canopy of the tomb is the coat of arms of the Sforza family, with two snakes and two eagles. Il Moro was deeply shaken by the premature death in childbirth of his very young wife Beatrice, companion in his private life but also in his political life, as well as, like her husband, a patron of the artistic geniuses of their court, such as Leonardo da Vinci and Il Bramante, authors of many paintings and architectural works of the Visconti-Sforza court. Several versions of this episode are known, especially from the 19th century, from that of 1815 by Giovanni Battista Cigola at the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, to that of Alessandro Reati from around 1850. The painting is presented in a finely carved wooden frame from the late 19th century.
