Mixed media (pencil, pen, brown ink, and white chalk) on paper. Italian school from the early 19th century. The scene depicts the encounter between a high priest and a military leader: while the leader is followed by his entire army, with fierce and armed soldiers of various ranks, the priest is followed by the entire people who acclaim the victor, while two young women on their knees offer wreaths of flowers. Behind the scene, the mighty walls with the entrance gate to a city, which the priest points to, almost as if to surrender it to the leader. The priest's attire, in particular the presence of the breastplate known as the "Breastplate of Judgment" that he wears, refers to an Israelite priest, and therefore the city could be Jerusalem; instead, the attire of the victorious leader, with the helmet surmounted by two horses, refers to Alexander the Great, who actually conquered the city in 332 BC. The drawing is presented in a finely carved wooden frame from the late 19th century.
