An extraordinary Louis XV frame, richly carved and gilded in pure gold, completes the work excellently.
Magnificent oil painting on canvas depicting one of the most fascinating scenes of Greek and Roman mythology.
The myth of Diana and Endymion is narrated in Ovid's "Metamorphoses" and tells the story of Diana, goddess of the hunt and the moon, and her impossible love for the young mortal shepherd Endymion.
Diana was hopelessly in love with this beautiful shepherd and asked her father Zeus to grant him eternal youth. Zeus partially fulfilled his daughter's requests, but in addition to not letting him age, he plunged Endymion into an eternal sleep. Diana could only admire her beloved who slept unaware. This myth explained, in ancient times, why, on certain nights, the sky was without the Moon: the goddess in love descended from the sky with her chariot pulled by swans to visit her sleeping love.
The canvas is painted masterfully, and the nude bodies of the two protagonists, arranged horizontally one above the other, are truly splendid. The goddess with her diaphanous skin and full of sensual femininity, and the handsome youth lying in a languid and virile pose. Two winged putti support Endymion to show him to Diana, while two others flutter in the sky around the carriage pulled by the swans, from which the goddess has descended.
The composition is particularly successful, and the nudity of the elegant figures stands out excellently in the setting rich in lights and shadows of the river undergrowth.
The work is to be attributed to the talented Parmesan master Michele Rocca, whose workshop specialized in the creation of paintings of a historical and mythological nature, always very articulated and scenographic.
