Louis Riché (Paris, 1877 - 1949)
Tigers
Cast and patinated bronze, 24 x 50 x 17 cm
Signed on the base on the right and inscription: "L. Riché. Medaille d’Or"
The sculpture in question, made of cast and patinated bronze and depicting a pair of tigers intent on fighting, is the work of the French sculptor Louis Riché (Paris, May 29, 1877 - Paris, 1949), as evidenced by the signature on the base on the right along with the inscription "Medaille d’Or".
Riché, in fact, was an artist particularly appreciated for the refinement of execution and the great naturalism that he managed to instill in his subjects: his first Parisian exhibition at the Salon des Artistes Français was, in fact, in 1896 at the age of only nineteen.
A student in the workshops of sculptors Georges Gardet (1863 – 1939) and Jacques Perrin (1847 – 1915), both skilled bronze sculptors, during his career he specialized in the creation of animals, both wild and domestic, such as wild boars, cats and lions, preferring however tigers/panthers and shepherd dogs, his favorite models, for which he is still considered an absolute master in reproduction.
Over the years, except for a brief pause during the events of the two world wars, he continued to regularly exhibit at the Salon and other prestigious international exhibitions, winning the gold medal several times and continuing to design his refined creations. His exploration of animal sculpture was, first and foremost, also an exploration of materials and various sculptural techniques: he experimented, in fact, with working with different materials, such as marble, wax, sometimes silver, ivory and, first of all, bronze. He collaborated mainly with the Parisian foundries Thiebault Frères and F. Claessens for the bronze casting of his models, also making use of the help of Risler and Carré for some silver castings.
His works, with their unmistakable modelling, today constitute a rich testimony to the animalier sculptural heritage.
