Giovanni Grifo's painting, linked to the late achievements of the historical school, assumes a character of its own both for the wisdom of the compositions and for the elegance of the forms when he superimposes lively movement and bright colors on the pictorial problem. He treated all pictorial techniques with equal ease: fresco, tempera, watercolor and oil painting. He created his most important works on easel paintings, largely created in the studio of one of the domes of the Genoa Stock Exchange building. Special mention should be made of his fresco decorations on vaults and facades. He asserted himself in the competition for the decoration of the facade of the S. Giorgio palace.
Due to an original artist's whim, he always abstained from participating in art exhibitions but made his love for Genoa and his faith in tradition public knowledge, restoring, at his own expense and with no small risk to his health, the ancient coat of arms of Genoa on the facade of the Lantern.
