The antique paintings category offers a Beautiful Portrait of a Young Woman Reading, an oil painting on panel, from the Mid-Twentieth Century. It is a portrait of a girl in a domestic setting, depicted in an intimate moment, elegantly dressed, while reading a book sitting near the window.
The painter uses warm colors that create a beautiful atmosphere with the light entering from the window and illuminating the room.
The work is signed H. Angéniol in the lower left, a French painter from Lyon of portraits, landscape paintings,
religious paintings, flower still lifes. French antique.
Henri-Charles Angéniol (1870-1959) studied at the School of Fine Arts in both Lyon and Paris, taking lessons with the
painter Tony Tollet and then later working in the studio of the artist Gustave Moreau.
He exhibited his paintings at the "Salon des Artistes Français" in Paris from 1904 to 1914.
He exhibited his works continuously at the "Société lyonnaise des Beaux-Arts" from 1919-1959.
In fact, the proposed painting has a label on the back which says Société lyonnaise des Beaux-Arts,
which demonstrates that the painting participated in an art exhibition.
Angéniol is praised by the press of the period for his ability to portray subjects in their
intimate expressiveness, in moments of everyday life. His painting was defined as "intimiste painting".
The work is framed with a carved and gilded wooden frame contemporary to the work.
The frame and oil painting have been professionally restored.
