Ivan Karpoff was born on January 30, 1898, in Novocherkassk and displayed an extraordinary predisposition for drawing and painting from a young age. Encouraged by his father, a surgeon, he was entrusted to a local painter. He graduated from the Rostov art high school and then moved to Kiev, where he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1916, called to arms, he was forced to interrupt his studies. Wounded and taken prisoner first by the Austrians and then by the British, he managed to escape to Sofia, Bulgaria, where he began attending the Academy of Fine Arts. He obtained an American scholarship and in 1925 arrived in Italy, in Milan (residing at 114 Viale Abruzzi), where he attended the School of Painting at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts. During his years at the Academy, he met the painter Julia Ivanovna Lund (1905-1974), of Norwegian origin but born in Russia, who became his wife in 1930 and with whom he had three children. He died on July 6, 1970, in Milan.
