Terrestrial globe from the famous Italian manufacturer G.B. Paravia e C., designed by Prof. Guido Coria, around 1920.
GB Paravia is one of the oldest publishing houses in our country.
Founded in Turin in 1802 by Giovanni Battista Paravia (1765-1826), it started as a publisher of predominantly school texts, in an era when the boundaries between the activities of printer, publisher, and bookseller were very blurred.
Upon his death, the company was taken over by his widow and cousin Innocenzo Vigliardi, who decided to extend the activity to the educational field, and then also to the printing of children's stories, mainly thanks to the collaboration of Emilio Salgari as a translator, author, and proofreader.
Born in Turin in 1851, Guido Cora held the chair of Geography and Statistics at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Turin from 1882, then of Physical Geography at the Faculty of Sciences. He had completed his studies in Germany. In the second half of the nineteenth century, he enjoyed great prestige. Cora was a tireless traveler in the Balkans, Australia, South America, Africa and became a great expert in polar geography; he is responsible for the first Italian colonial maps. Two promontories in New Guinea and one in Patagonia bear his name.
In 1897 he moved to Rome where he remained for fifteen years, starting geographical studies in that city and teaching geography at La Sapienza University. In 1873 he founded the geographical magazine "Cosmos". In 1886 he was awarded the Patron's Medal of the Royal Geographical Society "for significant service as a writer and cartographer".
He publishes globes and atlases for the publisher G.B. Paravia and numerous thematic maps; he also writes monographs relating to Africa, Croatia and Serbia.
