Interior scenes with monkeys.
The inventor of these unusual works was a Fleming named David Teniers the Younger. At one point in his career, he had the idea of inserting groups of monkeys in environments, especially interiors, engaged in performing all the actions that men normally do. This pictorial fashion was taken up especially in France with the painter Chardin.
Late 17th century, Flemish.
