This magnificent view of the city of Venice depicts one of the most fascinating places in the city, where the Cannaregio canal branches off from the Grand Canal, crossed by the famous Ponte delle Guglie (Bridge of Spires), so called for the presence of four obelisks placed on its sides.
On the left side of the painting, at the intersection of the two canals, stands the church of San Geremia with the sanctuary of Santa Lucia. Further ahead, directly overlooking the waters of the canal, is Palazzo Labia, which houses a true treasure of works of art, next to the long medieval bell tower.
It is a splendid work signed by Giuseppe Riva from Piedmont (Ivrea 1834-1916), who distinguished himself at the end of the 19th century for his lively city views, especially of the cities of Milan and Venice, as well as for the depiction of the most significant monuments of the main Lombard cities.
The "Venice" that we propose here is undoubtedly one of his most successful creations, both for the confident and precise brushstroke and for the lively and luminous color scheme, with a perfect choice of tones able to excellently describe a gray day with flashes of light of great effect.
