This splendid pair of paintings effectively depicts two characteristic Venetian views.
The landscape is the most typical of the surroundings of Venice and exemplarily expresses the more rural soul of the City, with enchanting lagoon dwellings far from the majestic noble palaces and monumental basilicas around the San Marco Basin.
The two views are particularly lively and offer an attractive description of the daily life of this extraordinary landscape, where boats docked on the banks of the canals are the only means of transport to move through the meanders of the lagoon.
The cheerful little squares in front of the churches are animated by characters who embody the Venetian spirit, with cloaks and the typical hats on their heads.
Every glimpse is described with great attention to detail, every shot is true poetry. The author rides on the inimitable characteristics of these magical places with an exciting explosion of lights and colors.
These are two magnificent autograph works by Eugenio "Zeno" Bonivento, one of the most interesting interpreters of the lagoon landscape in the early decades of the 20th century.
The two canvases are among his best works, both for the sure and precise brushstroke and for the exceptional, lively and luminous chromatism, with the combination of warm and cold colors for great effect.
Among his works, this pair of views is also a rarity, as it is larger in size than his catalog, which consists almost exclusively of small tablets, "souvenirs" for visitors to Venice.
They are presented in excellent condition, complete with their original gilded frames.
Biographical notes:
Eugenio Bonivento, known as "Zeno" (Chioggia, June 8, 1880 – Milan, November 12, 1956), trained as a painter in Venice, where he successfully attended the Academy of Fine Arts. Here he was immediately attracted by the study of the great Venetian Masters of the 18th century, especially the luminous lagoon views.
While maintaining the unmistakable chromatism and the description of the architectures and characters typical of the Venetian school, he interprets them in a more modern way with a full-bodied and dynamic brushstroke, always full of light.
Comanducci describes him as "The poet of light and air" and his works, which mainly depict the lagoon and the Venetian countryside, can in fact be defined as "airy and luminous" with an atmospheric rendition of great effect. Bonivento's love for his land is evident and he continued to depict it even after moving to Milan.
Among the exhibitions in his career, we remember the numerous participations in the Venice Biennale: that of 1912 and the three consecutive ones of 1920, 1922 and 1924. His paintings are exhibited among other places at the Galleria d'arte moderna in Milan and the Galleria internazionale d'arte moderna in Venice.
