Oil on canvas. The painting depicts a half-length portrait of a young man in deshabillé, lighting his pipe by drawing fire with a stick from the candle placed in front of him on the table, where a sword is also resting. Perhaps it is a young knight in a moment of relaxation. It is the candle, the sole source of light in the scene, that suggests the artist was inspired by the work of Georges De La Tour (1593-1652), the French Caravaggesque painter known for his "nocturnal" scenes. These scenes are characterized by figures, usually people of lower rank rather than historical models or high-status figures, illuminated by candlelight, creating a special atmosphere of intimacy. The painting, restored and re-stretched, is presented in a period-style frame.
