Eterna Matic 1000 Swiss watch, circa 1969.
The history of Eterna officially began on November 7, 1856. Its founders, Dr. Joseph Girard (surgeon) and Urs Shild, a teacher, named the company U.Shild & Co. Shild was an accountant at F. Kunz & Girard, when one day he managed to become a partner, changing the name to Girard & Shild, producing blanks and pocket watches. In 1866 Girard left the company and was replaced by Adolph Shild, Urs's brother.
In 1896, Adolph Shild left the company to found one under his own name: A. Shild or AS. In 1905, U. Shild & Co. was renamed Eterna. Eterna's success came in 1908 with the first watch with an integrated alarm clock. The history of Eterna is actually a good part of the history of modern watchmaking. In 1930 Eterna marketed the smallest form movement called "baguette", dedicated to women's watches.
In 1932 Eterna founded a new mechanical movement manufacturing company named ETA and expanded its production and its current know-how with the acquisition of Valjoux. In 1947, what would become a symbolic and legendary watch was born: the Eterna Kon Tiki.
In 1948 another successful Eterna watch was launched: the Eterna-Matic. On June 30, 2012, Eterna was acquired by the Volant Ltd. group.
