Small sculpted chest Italian Renaissance Lombardy, 16th century Walnut wood Dimensions cm. 62 x 32 H. 35 Excellent condition A true gem from the 16th century that impresses with its extraordinary strength, austere elegance, and stylistic perfection. Time has worked masterfully, just like the author, and the result is truly surprising. The small chest exhibits all the inimitable characteristics of the rare and magnificent authentic furnishings of the 16th century, too often confused with the copious 19th-century re-editions. The chest is entirely sculpted with rich decorations both on the front and on the sides. The two lateral pilasters enclose a single central panel. On the sides are depicted two splendid Renaissance-style mascarons. The base is exceptional, composed of an important gadrooning with an underlying dentiled frame and a further apron on three sides that unites the supporting feet. Its condition is excellent. All the carving has remained intact. Some old restoration interventions have taken care of the restoration of the hinges and the consolidation of the lid.
