Tyrolean Wedding Chest
CODE: C152
Measurements: H.80 – W.156 – D.55
Era: early 18th century
Origin: Tyrol
Wood: Fir
Large Tyrolean chest, in fir wood, with a shaped lowering.
The front is divided into five framed panels, three smaller and two larger.
The surface is painted with warm colors such as brown, brick red, ocher; the sides feature a decoration that reproduces the grain of the wood. The absence of floral decorations, the patina, and the type of construction indicate that the chest can be dated to the early 18th century.
In this era, in fact, Tyrolean painted furniture was decorated with very simple motifs, sometimes geometric, or more simply with backgrounds that reproduced wood, marble, or other precious woods that could not be found in the Alpine valleys.
Internally, this chest has been carefully cleaned and still has the typical small compartment with a drop-down door, also useful for keeping the chest lid open (visible in the photo).
