Pair of Venetian capriccios, signed E. Zeno - First half of the 20th century.
Pair of splendid views of Venice.
Oil on canvas applied to cardboard, enriched by original double-order frames.
Eugenio Bonivento, also known as Zeno, was a painter born in Chioggia in 1880 and died in Milan in 1956.
He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice and later became a pupil of Guglielmo Ciardi, from whom he learned the poetic landscape vein, linked to the vedutistic tradition of the Venetian lagoon.
He participated in several editions of the Venice Biennale and his paintings are kept in numerous public and private collections.
The subjects of these paintings are part of the Vedutismo current.
Vedutismo is a genre born in the 18th century and developed mainly in Venice.
The vedutisti aimed to represent a landscape in an objective and scientific way, placing it as the protagonist of the work. Basically, there are two types of views, the realistic one, taken as it is from reality, and the "capriccio," a fantasy view invented by the painter.
The interpretation that Eugenio Bonivento gives of the Venetian vedutistic tradition is very personal and updated to a contemporary sensibility.
The framing, with a wide and scenographic cut, is in line with the views of the eighteenth century.
It is rather in the pictorial interpretation that Bonivento shows his own pictorial matrix which is of post-impressionist derivation.
