Stormy seas with galleons on the coasts.
Orazio Grevenbroeck (Milan 1676 - Naples 1739)
Pair of oil paintings on canvas.
First canvas with original frame and stretchers.
Canvas 50 x 34 cm
Frame 56 x 40 cm
Excellent condition.
Intact works, never cleaned or restored.
This rare pair of magnificent capriccios depicting coastal views with galleons at the mercy of the waves, are to be included as unpublished works in the catalog of Orazio Grevembroeck.
Son of Giovanni and brother of Alessandro, together with them and with the same unmistakable pictorial style, Orazio produced a series of splendid seascapes.
The setting always follows the same script with fanciful Mediterranean views depicting ports, rocky coasts, and the inevitable boats, where meticulous images of sailing ships and galleons stand out.
The splendid seascapes published here break away from the usual standards of his production, which shows the luminous bays with calm seas and boats anchored in the roadstead. In fact, stormy seas are a very rare scene for the works of the Grevembroeck.
We find the identical characteristics in a painting entitled "Storm on the Coast" by Orazio Grevembroeck exhibited at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna which measures cm. 20 x 35. (see photo).
The waves of the sea seem to be part of the same paintings.
