The frame is the original
Large-sized painting on copper depicting a typical Flemish scene inside a particularly lively tavern, full of patrons.
The work is executed with exceptional finesse both in the description of the characters and in the infinite variety of objects present inside the premises.
The scene, in fact, stands out from the usual Flemish works for the large number of details that animate the tavern. The composition is divided into two distinct situations and features in the foreground a group of cheerful smokers intent on lighting their pipes in a festive atmosphere. In the right part of the painting, in the background and in semi-darkness, another group of peasants drink and smoke near the fire of a fireplace. The door opens to let in a woman holding a jug of wine. The author's ability in rendering the faces that characterize the protagonists is truly remarkable, as is the miniaturistic precision in the depiction of objects and pottery that furnish the tavern.
The liveliness of the colors, in the most typical tones of the Flemish-Dutch school, contributes to expressing a message of festive cheer, which involves the viewer in a very pleasant way. The copper is of good size and such an interesting subject lends itself perfectly to furnishing a kitchen environment or a dining area, attracting interest and curiosity in an atmosphere of warmth and cheer.
The state of preservation of the painting is excellent.
