Francesco Giuseppe Ciseri (Florence 1858 - 1933)
Genre scene with a child feeding her grandmother
Oil on canvas, 46 x 60 cm
Signed upper right "F. Cis 1889"
The signature made with red paint, a detail present in many of the painter's works, connects the painting to the hand of Francesco Giuseppe Ciseri (Florence 1858 - 1933).
This painting deviates from the painter's catalog, who, like his father, prefers to try his hand at sacred themes and portraits. In this case, it is a genre scene in which the protagonists are common people. This type of painting was very successful at the end of the 19th century. Paintings depicting the lower classes in idyllic settings and joyful images had great market success, especially in the foreign market. In this case, we see a mother holding a child who is likely feeding her grandmother with fruit, all in a playful atmosphere.
Born in Florence on May 19, 1858, he is the son of the famous painter Antonio Ciseri and Cesira Bianchini. His artistic education depends closely on his father's activity: he was constantly present in his father's studio. In 1875 he began the normal course of artistic studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. Among his earliest works are a replica of a Sacred Heart of Mary and a portrait of the Emperor of Brazil, Don Pedro, taken from a photograph, both from 1877. In the same year, he accompanied his father on one of his frequent trips to Rome. In 1883, another portrait of his, that of Mario Brian Rei, brother-in-law of his sister Caterina, is documented. Also in 1883, he participated in the Florentine Promotrice with a genre painting, L'Annaspo. His first important work dates back to 1884, when he executed a Sacred Heart for the church of S. Salvatore in Jerusalem. For the same church, in 1886 he finished a very free copy of the Dream of St. Joseph, painted by Antonio: commissions obtained through his father, who had received numerous assignments for the churches of Jerusalem.
