Lombard School, 16th century
Portrait of a scholar
Oil on panel, 42 x 31 cm
With frame, 66 x 55 cm
The work in question represents an elegant profile portrait referable to the Lombard school of the sixteenth century. The effigy, portrayed here with stately composure, would seem to refer to a scholar or a person of high rank, as evidenced by the jacket and cap in red fabric. The hat, in fact, was a fashionable accessory considered indispensable for men of the past, acting in effect as a sign of distinction for the higher social classes.
Pictured here in profile according to the numismatic tradition of the ancient medallion, particularly widespread in Italy between 1450 and 1500 thanks also to the production of Pisanello, the effigy presents particularly vibrant details, which allow the viewer to get a clear idea of the physiognomic appearance of the humanist in adulthood. The profile depiction allowed to highlight the characteristic physiognomic traits of the person, and at the same time to idealize and stylize the figure, making it recognizable while eliminating physical defects; without dwelling exclusively on the face, the profile portrait allowed to focus attention also to the way of dressing, to the gestures, to the pose.
As often happens in the portrait genre, the silhouette of the protagonist emerges from a neutral plain background, in this case green, a trick that allowed so to enhance the silhouette of the main subject, concentrating on it all the attention of the viewer.
The portrait of this scholar is part of the current of cultured portraiture, and in particular in the famous tradition of the depiction of the "Illustrious Men", works often collected in series portraying personalities and particularly influential benefactors of the time. The portraits, both painted and sculpted, assumed in fact a celebratory and commemorative role very important in the Renaissance society, evaluated by customers as real symbolic objects of their status quo and their earthly fame, as well as their wealth.
