Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. The god is depicted standing, filling the scene, dressed only in a cloth around his loins and ivy leaves on his hips and head, while holding a goblet in one hand; his gaze is vacant and glassy-eyed. Behind him, a semi-reclined cherub plays with ivy. All around, white clouds, just as the supporting ground is white, with flashes of blue sky and a green bush creating the only contrasts. On the back of the work is a "Mario Galli Art Collection" label, with catalog number 64 and autograph writing by the artist. The work well represents the painting of this artist from Modena, but who was artistically trained first in Rome and then in Florence, where he spent most of his life. His rich production initially proposed mainly historical subjects, but then turned to portraiture and finally to landscape: his uniqueness is recognized in the ability to range from the historical subject, often placed in settings derived from ancient Pompeii, to the naturalism of the Macchiaioli style, of his second period, in which Muzzioli sought a significant perception of the atmosphere and light in subjects inspired by the Tuscan rural environment, often placed in ancient times. In this work, a portrait of a mythological character, the artist's luministic intent strongly shines through, the search for the effect of light that plays in the naked bodies of the god and the cherub, then fading into the background. The Art Gallery label refers to the Florentine Mario Galli (1877 -1946), a sculptor who was also an important collector of works, especially by Macchiaioli artists. The work has a significant craquelure and has been relined. It is presented in a period-style frame.
