The Torricelli tube or Torricelli barometer, named after its inventor, Evangelista Torricelli (1608-1647), was the first measuring instrument specially designed to measure atmospheric pressure. It consists of a glass tube closed on one side and open on the other, with a section of one square centimeter (the section of the tube does not matter, as long as it is not a capillary and there is enough liquid to fill the tube to the appropriate height) one meter long, filled with mercury, placed in a tray, also containing mercury, so as to create a system of communicating vessels. The choice of this element is given by its high density, which allows you to work at high pressures with relatively small volumes.
