The painting, of considerable size and great decorative effect, depicts three young women dancing while a man marks time by clapping his hands. Around the scene, other women observe attentively; one holds a zither, while another waves a fan. The scene takes place in an open space, in neoclassical style, decorated with a colonnade and marble statues. The scene appears to be the moment dedicated to music and dance during a symposium in ancient Greece.
Among the Greeks and Romans, the symposium was that convivial practice, which followed the banquet, during which the diners drank, sang songs and dedicated themselves to entertainments of various kinds, including dancing.
The subject is extremely pleasant and in Neoclassical taste.
