Oil on canvas of good size, rich in details and permeated by the lively Venetian colorism typical of the paintings of the second half of the sixteenth century. The scenic setting, the figures and the theme are typical of the works that came out of the workshop of the Bassano family, a famous family of painters who worked in the Veneto region between the second half of the sixteenth century and the early seventeenth century.
The painting depicts a scene from the biblical parable of Lazarus and the feast of the rich Epulone and is intended to illustrate, as with other parables, mercy and compassion towards the poor, but is also of particular importance for its references to life after death.
