A magnificent Russian icon, finely painted in four sections plus a central oval one. At the top, the "Dormition of the Virgin" and "Unexpected Joy," and at the bottom, two groups of Saints. In the center of the panel is the image of Christ in the "Descent into Hell," and in the frame, on the sides of the work, are depicted two Protector Saints.
The icon is truly splendid and stands out for the remarkable pictorial quality, the composition of great effect, but above all for the extraordinary vivacity of the colors used. In fact, the luminous chromaticism is particularly pleasant and provokes a positive devotional feeling.
The pictorial style is refined and expresses the most typical characteristics of the best Russian production of the late 18th century, especially the famous Palekh manufacture. This small town located northeast of Moscow has become famous for the miniaturist skill of its iconographers who excelled in rendering details and in the unmistakable luminosity of the magnificent colors.
