"The Nymph Galatea" ---------------
Circle of Antoine Coypel (Paris 1661-1722) ----------
Oil on canvas ----------
Beautiful antique carved and gilded frame --------
Canvas size 41 x 32 frame 60 x 52 --------
This elegant 18th-century canvas features the beautiful Nymph Galatea, the most famous of the fifty Nereids, with whom the Cyclops Polyphemus fell madly in love. ----------
Here we see her sitting naked on a shell-shaped carriage. --------
She is accompanied by a nymph lying in the shadows next to her, and by a small winged faun who follows her swimming with his hand resting on the shell.-------
The body of the splendid Sea Creature is prosperous and her nudity is highlighted by the strong light that envelops her and makes her shine in the center of the painting between the sky and the sea. --------
The painting, of French school, follows the models of Antoine Coypel and is probably a preparatory study, executed in an excellent manner, for a large work. --------
The canvas has already been professionally cleaned and relined and is in excellent condition in a splendid carved and gilded frame.
