Study of men
Pen
Measurements: mm 185 x 146
In this sheet, the author creates a study of men. From top to bottom, the artist, through marked contour lines and focusing attention on the faces of the characters, creates a pyramidal image; the first man, covered in a draped robe, with his arms raised and his face contracted in anger, seems to hurl his force against the second character, who is studied twice. In the foreground, the subject is visibly frightened, his eyes are terrified, and he tries to cover his face with his right arm. The expression of fear and terror is emphasized in the study of the bare face, wide eyes, and open mouth, between astonishment and a scream. At the top, in the center and on the right, again in pen, we find the number 183, which most likely indicated a cataloging. On the back, again with a quick and vibrant stroke that gives dynamism and pathos, a scene from a composition by Raphael is reworked.
Example on laid paper. Discreet state of conservation, missing lower left corner.
