This elegant console in finely carved, lacquered, and gilded wood fully represents the taste that prevailed in Naples at the end of the 18th century, in the Neoclassical period.
The half-moon shaped piece of furniture has a white marble top. The underlying band features refined carvings with gilded decorations in Neoclassical style in the shape of floral and plant elements inscribed in elegant frames and reserves. At the center, a large decoration with concentric circles encloses a large flower. On the sides, there are particular carvings with a mask with oriental features crowned by a leafy branch and ribbons. The four legs, which evoke tapered columns of classical taste, have a capital-shaped head and a conical body, with gilded phytomorphic motifs, which narrow towards the circular-sectioned feet.
In the important Italian palaces, already from the 17th century and then throughout the 18th century, consoles were among the most sought-after furnishings, an emblem of the commissioner's wealth, to be displayed in the large reception halls. This type of highly decorative furniture is still of great scenic effect today and contributes to the elegance and refinement of any environment that houses it, whether it is of modern or antique taste.
