CONCERNING THE FAMILIAR LETTERS OF THE COMMANDER ANNIBAL CARO, Aldo Manuzio, Venice, 1574

Soft parchment. 446 pages, divided into first and second volumes, both with title pages featuring illustrations of an imperial eagle on a crown placed as a crest of a shield bordered by acanthus leaves. The shield depicts an eagle on an anchor and dolphin. Ornate initials. Handwritten inscriptions in ancient script on the flyleaf. The book compiles the 465 Familiar Letters that Annibale Caro (Civitanova Marche 1507 - Frascati 1566) wrote during his life, an interesting document of the social and political life, and the artistic and literary discussions of the time. Published in Venice by Aldo Manuzio the Younger (son of Paolo) between 1572 and 1575 (the second volume was printed in 1575 following the reprint of the first volume in 1574), it can be considered one of the most important epistolary collections of the Renaissance. Excellent state of preservation, slight wear to the hinges.
