An interesting example of a typical Tuscan walnut chest (remarkable also for its contained dimensions). In Tuscany, the chest was considered the main piece of furniture in the house and at times was considered a worthy field of application for great artists between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The Ghirlandaio workshop was famous, which, in addition to painting and sculpture, was dedicated to the artisanal production of furniture of this type which was then painted or sculpted and carved as in our case. These pieces of furniture, even before chests of drawers and wardrobes (which would come much later), were used to contain clothes, including the most precious ones that the bride brought as a dowry. And it is for this reason that the chest was generally kept at the foot of the wedding bed.
Our chest is characterized by large thicknesses of solid walnut wood and by two columns placed in the center of the front with four carved daisies that delimit the corners. The front itself, together with horizontal moldings, is divided into three panels. The underlying part is interesting and curious, underlined by oblique frets that interrupt the verticality of the lines and hide a drawer that was certainly used for slippers and house shoes. Divaricated corbel feet that were often made instead of claw feet that not all clients liked. Perfect state of conservation with an extraordinary beauty where the ancient grooves made with the "gouge" to make the wood as smooth as possible are fully visible.
Original working lock, key and ironwork.
