Pair of paintings, still in their original canvas, oil on canvas measuring 70 x 82 cm without frame and 80 x 92 cm with a contemporary frame, by the painter Felice Boselli (Piacenza 1650 – Parma 1732) depicting still lifes with popular figures, animals, and game.
Felice Boselli was an Italian painter of the Baroque period, known especially for still lifes of game. He was a painter active mainly in Parma and his hometown, where he studied and was introduced to the world of painting under the guidance of Michelangelo Nuvolone, brother of the more famous Giuseppe. In that workshop, he had the opportunity to meet Angelo Crivelli (known as il Crivellone), an animalist specializing in game, who significantly influenced his style along with the Cremonese school, the Bergamo school of Baschenis, Bartolomeo Bettera, the Roman school of Michelangelo Cerquozzi, as well as the Flemish school. The other foundations of his pictorial personality came from the study and observation of regional and local still lifes, from Parmigianino concerning the figures, from Annibale Carracci's Butcher's Shop for recurring themes and scenes. Thanks to his works, scattered everywhere in the houses of the nobles of Piacenza and Parma, he was given the opportunity to lead a comfortable life; the country and modest style and language was, however, the foundation of his works and his success. In his works, a cat often appears, which seems to represent his name: feles (feline) = felix (happy). Yet Boselli did not exclusively paint domestic scenes. He was called by Alessandro Sanvitale to decorate the theater of Fontanellato, where he worked from 1681 to 1690, was a painter for the Sanvitale counts in the early 1700s for over 10 years, and in addition to paintings of fish and bloody meats, he also painted many portraits.
