NARCISO CASSINO
NARCISO CASSINO (1914-2003)
Narciso Cassino was born in Candia Lomellina in 1914.
At the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, he was a student of highly renowned masters such as Aldo Carpi and Francesco Messina, and he later returned to the Brera Art High School (and for some courses at the Academy itself) as a teacher.
An artist of national resonance, he has collected flattering affirmations, in a lifetime dedicated to figuration, and especially to sculpture, from his first exhibition in 1936 to today. At the Venice Biennale in 1942, he won an award for sculpture; in 1949 in San Remo the national prize ex-aequo; in Alessandria in 1951 and at the Angelicum in Milan in 1953 he was awarded the national sculpture prizes for sacred art. He also had a special recognition in 1954 at the National Exhibition of Carrara, and he was awarded in Ancona in 1959 the Marche prize ex-aequo and in Forlì in 1960 the Garzanti prize for figurative sculpture. Also in '60 at the Autumn Piedmontese exhibition in Turin he had the gold medal of the Ministry of Public Education and in the same event in 1966 the Piedmont prize. In 1968 in Florence he achieved a recognition at the Arte e Sport exhibition, and again in 1977 he was awarded the prize for sculpture.
In 1968 he was awarded by Don Orione in Rome at the national exhibition of Sacred Art. Among his many exhibitions, it is worth mentioning the "personal" exhibition set up in Modena by the Modenese Association of the Press, and the anthological exhibition most recently held in the Castello Sforzesco in Vigevano in 1953. He is, among other things, the author of the colossal statuary group of the "Mater Dei" that towers over the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Guardia of Tortona and of the models for the door in Alba of the Mother Church of the Pia Società San Paolo. In 1980 at the exhibition of sacred art in honor of San Benedetto in Norcia and Spoleto he was awarded one of the three medals for artistic merit. In the same year he won the competition for the marble group of Don Orione for the Duomo of Milan which was placed outside the Ambrosian basilica.
Some of his works are present in Ravenna at the Museum of the Dantesco Center in the Franciscan Convent. Works by the sculptor are also kept in the Vatican, at the Museum of Modern Art in Milan, in Brescia at the Museum of Contemporary Art "Art and Spirituality" and in numerous private collections.
He dies on January 31, 2003.
