OIL ON CANVAS – DIMENSIONS 132 X 106 CM
The painting depicts Diana the Huntress, the Italic Goddess.
Diana is an Italic, Latin, and Roman goddess, lady of the forests, protector of wild animals, guardian of springs and streams, protector of women, ensuring painless childbirth, and bestower of sovereignty. This Roman goddess is often associated with the Greek mythological goddess Artemis, but according to some scholars, the fusion of the two figures occurred only later. Artemis-Diana, goddess of hunting, virginity, archery, woods, and the Moon, was further identified with other oriental female deities during the religious syncretism of the imperial age.
According to legend, Diana - a young virgin skilled in hunting, as irascible as she was vindictive - was a lover of solitude and an enemy of banquets; she used to roam in isolated places. In the name of Love, she had vowed chastity, and for this reason, she was affable, if not even protective, only towards those who - like Hippolytus and the nymphs who promised to maintain their virginity - entrusted themselves to her.
Diana is the twin of Apollo (or Phoebus) and is the daughter of Jupiter and Latona.
