Nogari here confirms what was already understood by Marquis Ottavio Casnedi, his patron, who first, noticing his skills, began to request paintings of half-figures from him. Generally speaking, the theme of the portrait involved the Venetian artist throughout his career, so much so that he is now especially known for his characters portrayed in half-busts but also in full figures, all imbued with heartfelt expressiveness as in the case of our painting.
The old woman is in fact shown here in half-bust, rotated with a compassionate gaze turned towards the viewer as if she were demanding something from us. It is a woman at the spinning wheel intent on the mechanical operation of spinning, portrayed in the shadows of a probable spinning mill, isolated from the context and lit by a warm, direct and engaging light that enhances the reflections of her white hair as well as her complexion now furrowed by the passage of time. In addition to the woman's miserable condition, the snapshot of an era of transition between the agricultural economy and the dawn of the industrial economy emerges, exemplified precisely by the spinning mills of northern Italy.
Swift, pasty brushstroke, palette composed of earthy, shadowy colors, perfectly in line with the indigent dimension of the portrayed character.
Beautiful box frame enlivened by a triple order of gilded wooden carving and a flat black-tinted band embellished with gilded racemes in the four corners.
