17th century
Crucifix
Boxwood, cm height 42
The sculpture depicting Christ crucified examined here represents a refined example of 17th-century boxwood cabinet making. The figure of Christ, now dead on the cross, is part of a precious artistic choreography with the structure of the cross and its pedestal, both decorated with tortoise shell mirrors, ivory threads to emphasize the structure of the cross and elements in ebonized and carved wood to highlight the architectural structure of the pedestal.
Christ's departure is evident from his lowered head, his hands open in abandonment, and his feet now softly drooping. The lower part of the torso, the abdomen, tense and contracted, seems to refer to the last breath exhaled, as well as the loincloth, a meager piece of fabric, is moved by an invisible breeze that ripples the fabric with those draperies and those tangled folds typical of Baroque art, made of fullness and emptiness.
