Nicolas Beatrizet was born in Luneville (in France, Lorraine region) in 1507 or perhaps earlier. His style suggests that he was a student of Ghisi and Agostino Veneziano de Musis. Around 1540 he moved to Rome and until 1560 he engraved under the direction of Michelangelo.
According to several scholars, the importance of Beatrizet's works (later called Beatricetto in Italy) lies in the fact that several of them are taken from scenes painted by some of the greatest artists of his time, including Michelangelo. Beatricetto's mastery therefore lies in knowing how to graphically reproduce scenes from large paintings in a small-sized plate, such as this one referring to Michelangelo's Last Judgment, which he created a few decades earlier on the vertical wall of the Sistine Chapel.
The table proposed here, datable to 1562, constitutes one of the nine burin-engraved sheets with which Beatrizet graphically realized Michelangelo's Last Judgment. It is possible that Michelangelo himself saw and approved of Beatricetto's graphic realization, who, at this point, can be considered his pupil and follower.
