It is a round and convex mirror, which returns an all-encompassing image of the room in which it is placed: due to the curved surface, the reflection is distorted as by a wide-angle lens - a distortion called in photographic jargon "barrel distortion".
Also called "bankers' mirrors", they were used since the 14th century by money changers and goldsmiths to keep their shops under control with a wider view. Yet it was two hundred years later, in the interior design of the bourgeois homes of northern Europe, that these mirrors found their fortune; a luxury that was then democratized in the 19th century, when they began to be produced industrially.
