[...] "This painting constitutes a precious testimony to deepen the knowledge of a "battalist", Giovanni Canti (Parma 1653 Mantua 1716), only partially highlighted by critics; but which, in light of this new significant acquisition to his catalog, acquires a more clear and valid focus. In fact, in this canvas, with a loose formal definition and an elegant realization of the bodies in the foreground, for which Mannerist ascendants emerge, and a clear chromatic stratification and pasty material, it is possible to appreciate not only the influence of Brescianino, of whom Giovanni was a student, but also of his ancestors, from Rubens and Fetti to Bazzani, recognizable in the cultural epicenter of the Gonzaga in Mantua, where he worked."
