Alms dish, "Elemosiniere"
Beaten, embossed, and punch-worked brass
Southern Germany (Nuremberg), 16th century
Diameter: 42 cm
Embossed brass dish, characterized by a central rosette raised with large lanceolate leaves, curved and interspersed with interstices decorated with small embossed elements.
The central decoration, also called "panettone", is surrounded by a crown bearing inscriptions.
The outer edge of the brim, folded over the classic iron wire, is punch-decorated and features stylized architectural motifs.
Of note is the old cataloging inscription on the back: "9196 eui"
The dish, in good condition, is placed in the production of Southern Germany, second half of the 16th century.
These artifacts were made by cold hammering on previously created negatives and decorated with punches.
Their function could be liturgical...or profane.
The decorative value of these splendid gold-colored artifacts often adorned and enriched the interior of patrician homes.
How many times have we seen them portrayed in Italian or Flemish paintings of the Renaissance period depicting the interiors of sumptuous dwellings.
Or inserted, always with ornamental value, to decorate the rooms during festivals and rich banquets.
