Hammered, embossed, and punched brass plate
Southern Germany (Nuremberg), 16th century
Diameter 37.2 cm
Embossed brass plate, characterized by a small, smooth central roundel from which stylized, curved, swollen leaves radiate, marked by a prominent vein.
The central composition is surrounded by a concentric circular border bearing an inscription in Gothic characters.
The outer edge of the brim, folded over the classic iron wire, is decorated with punch work and features a double border with phytomorphic characters and stylized architectural motifs.
The plate, in good condition, originates from the production of Southern Germany in the 16th century.
These artifacts were made by cold hammering on previously created negatives, and ornamented with punch work.
Their function could be liturgical... or secular.
The decorative value of these splendid gold-colored artifacts meant that they often adorned and enriched the interiors of patrician houses.
How many times have we seen them portrayed in Italian or Flemish paintings of the Renaissance period, depicting the interiors of sumptuous homes?
Or inserted, also with ornamental value, to decorate environments during parties and lavish banquets.
