SOLD - Alms dish, embossed brass, South Germany (Nuremberg), 16th century  Translated
Description:
Hammered, embossed, and punched brass South Germany (Nuremberg), 16th century Diameter 42.6 cm Central disc embossed in imitation of a 12-petal flower corolla, around which runs a rich circular ornamentation alternating three mermaids, three elegant thistles, and six imaginative vegetable decorations of different types. Two concentric circular crowns in Gothic characters close the rich and complex structure of the central part of the dish. The outer edge of the brim, folded over the classic iron wire, is punched with a crown presenting stylized architectural motifs. The dish, in excellent condition, of great rarity in reference to the ornamentation, and of good size, is placed in the production of southern Germany (Nuremberg) of the 16th century. These artifacts were made by cold hammering on previously created negatives, and decorated with a punch. Their function could be liturgical... or profane. The decorative value of these splendid gold-colored artifacts meant that they often adorned and enriched the interior of patrician houses. How many times have we seen them portrayed in Italian or Flemish paintings of the Renaissance period depicting the interiors of sumptuous dwellings. Or inserted, always with ornamental value, to decorate the rooms, during parties and rich banquets. Reference bibliography -Tamàs Egyeki – Szabo, Beckenschlagerschusseln (15.-16.
