Article Description
Pair of round paintings, "Cherubs' Games&rdquo. Paintings on ceramic framed by splendid gilded neoclassical frames. The two paintings are distinguished by their diversified scenes. Graceful cherubs intent on playing among the clouds, with drapes of precious fabrics, laying down bows and arrows to bask in sweet "dolce far niente". These splendid figures, from which grace and joy shine through, seem to take a break from their chores to throw themselves into an innocent and cheerful game. The figures of the children, with sweet and tender gazes, transmit a kind of peace and harmony, while the fabrics swollen by the breeze of a festive wind give movement to the composition, the clouds that form the background seem to place this scene in an indefinite time and place. Pastel colors dominate, in shades of pink for one, and light blue for the other. The round shape accentuates the particularity of these works which almost recall antiquity, or a sort of mythological so loved in the early nineteenth century.
